Truckers Guide to APU Financing

The Days Of Casual Truck Idling Are Over

High-priced diesel fuel and strict state and local idling regulations are increasing the popularity of and demand for APUs. Each year, more and more trucking companies are retrofitting existing trucks and requesting APUs on their new trucks.

Various federal, state and nonprofit organizations provide funding that can be used for APUs and other technology designed to reduce emissions from long-duration truck idling. Because of the importance of reducing truck idling, the amount of money available through grants alone totals in the millions.

The vast majority of funds is available through state governments. Across the country, state agencies are increasingly aware of the benefits APUs provide, both in cost savings for truckers and lower noise and air pollution levels for the general public. As a result, a growing number of states are providing financial assistance to trucking companies, large and small.

Just like idling regulations, financial assistance for APUs varies widely. Some states offer low-interest loans, while others provide grants or tax credits. Many programs are cooperative efforts of state and federal agencies. Some are more complicated than others. All require research. But the time is well spent, considering that some states have made millions of dollars available to help truckers finance anti-idling technology.

The Truckers Guide to APU Financing is Divided into Three Sections

  • Part 1: An explanation of programs provided by agencies of the federal government, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Department of Energy.
  • Part 2: A state-by-state compendium of programs offering low-interest loans, grants and tax credits designed specifically to help trucking companies purchase new or retrofitted idling technology, including APUs.
  • Part 3: A list of collaboratives. These are regional networks that combine the efforts of local, state and federal governments, the private sector and environmental groups to reduce diesel emissions.
